Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS)

Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS) is a nationally representative sample survey to obtain the information necessary to address the monitoring and evaluation needs of the Health, Population and Nutrition Sector in Bangladesh and to provide managers and policy makers involved in this program with the data that they need to effectively plan and implement future interventions. By this time, seven rounds of BDHS surveys have been implemented in 1993-94, 1996-97, 1999-2000, 2004, 2007, 2011, and 2014. BDHS is a collaborative research activity of NIPORT and ICF International, USA with financial assistance of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The survey was implemented by a Bangladeshi research firm, Mitra and Associates.

BDHS collects information from households, ever-married women age 10-49 and ever-married men age 15-54. Community information are collected from key informants living in the community. However, BDHS 2014 excluded men sample and collected data from households and ever-married women age 15-49.

BDHS provides information on health, population and nutrition indicators for national and divisional levels for monitoring the progress of the health sector programs, the Five Year Plans of the government, Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically, BDHS provides information on fertility and childhood mortality levels; fertility preferences; use of family planning methods; maternal, newborn, and child health including breastfeeding practices; nutritional status of under-5 children; knowledge and attitudes toward HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs); and community-level data on accessibility and availability of health and family planning services. In addition, BDHS 2004 and 2011 provide information on causes of childhood mortality, BDHS 2007 provides data on domestic violence, and BDHS 2011 provides information on biomarkers including anaemia levels of mothers and children, blood glucose level and blood pressure of adults.

BDHS provides trends data since 1993-94 to analyse socio-economic and health outcomes in Bangladesh. The data sets are available free of cost and widely used for further research and academic purposes.
