Bangladesh Maternal Mortality and Health Care Survey (BMMS)

BMMS aims to provide precise estimate of maternal mortality ratio in Bangladesh for monitoring Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and goals of health sector programs and five-year plans of the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. The survey also provides data on causes of maternal death, use of maternal health services and related determinants. Generating district level estimates of socio-economic, demographic, family planning and maternal health indicators are another important objective of the survey. BMMS 2016 also tries to produce national estimate of prevalence of selected maternal morbidity – fistula and prolapsed uterus.

The first BMMS was conducted in 2001 and the second one in 2010. The third BMMS is being implemented in 2016. BMMS is one of the largest household sample survey in Bangladesh which covered about 100,000 households in 2001, 175,000 households in 2010, and about 309,000 households in 2016.

Like previous surveys, BMMS 2016 is being conducted by the National Institute of Population Research and Training (NIPORT), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare under the Operational Plan of Training, Research and Development (TRD) of the Health, Population and Nutrition Sector Development Program (HPNSDP) . MEASURE Evaluation, UNC-CH, USA, the International Centre for Diarrheal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B), and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/Bangladesh are providing technical assistance for the survey. Field survey is being implemented by Mitra and Associates and by the Associates for Community and Population Research (ACPR). BMMS 2016 is funded by the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, USAID, and DFID.
